Poll Names New Zealand in Top of World's Most Desired Migrant Destination List

Gallup's Potential Net Migration Index finds New Zealand has now moved to become one of the worlds most desired migrant destinations up from the number three position. Singapore is the only country now ahead of New Zealand.

Using the CIA’s world fact book to compare the two countries has uncovered some interesting comparisons. New Zealand’s land mass of 267’710 sq kilometres has a population of 4.2 Million where Singapore land mass of just 697 sq kilometres tightly packs in as many as 4.6 Million. Such figures relating to population density perhaps indicate differing reasons for why each location is so sought after.

Differing demographics in term of the migrant’s original country of origin are as follows according to the world fact book. New Zealand for an example shows a population of 68.9% Europeans, 7.9% Maori, 4.4% Pacific Island and Asian 5.7%. Singapore in comparison using the same bench mark shows the Asian Population is much higher with a population of 76.8% Chinese, 13.9% Malay and 7.9% Indian.

According to Gallup, should results from the Gallup poll translate into population gains, some wealthy nations like New Zealand could see the populations treble; the benefits of increasing population are potentially huge to New Zealand, the challenges with infrastructure daunting.

Researcher Elsie Ho, from the University of Auckland's School of Population Health, says New Zealand's clean, green image and the perception that it is a safe country was a draw card. But she said it was "impossible to envisage" the country's population hitting over 12 million in the near future. "Before we can even think of the economic benefits that brings, we have to consider the possible conflict and tensions if such numbers are let in," Dr Ho said. "New Zealanders may be more accepting of immigrants who come from similar backgrounds, such as Britain and America, but not so with migrants from Asia, Africa and the Middle East for example."

For Motor Industry migrants, the time to migrate to New Zealand is now. It is hard to imagine that with the levels of interest Immigration NZ is receiving that at some point debate to what is the appropriate population for New Zealand will begin; all the more so given New Zealanders propensity to protect its clean green image with land conversation.

Results are based on telephone and face-to-face interviews with 347,717 adults, aged 15 and older, in 148 countries from 2007 to early 2010. The 148 countries surveyed represent about 95% of the world's adult population. In Gulf Cooperation Council countries, only Arab nationals and Arab expatriates were surveyed. Potential Net Migration Index scores for countries where non-Arab expats make up more than 50% of the adult population are not reported: United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Index scores are not reported for countries where total sample sizes are 500 or lower because of the volatility in the index as measured by the margin of error: Belize, Cyprus, Guyana, Iceland, Luxembourg, Malta, Slovenia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
